Dublin City Council Adopts Sustainability Plan, Paving the Way for Sustainable Living
October 20, 2025(Dublin, Ohio) — Dublin City Council adopted the Dublin Sustainability Plan during the Oct. 6 Council Meeting, furthering Dublin’s commitment to being the most sustainable global city of choice.
The plan is intended to serve as a framework for collective action for a sustainable Dublin that is as inclusive and equitable as it is impactful. Building on the City’s 2018 sustainability goals, the plan provides a roadmap of measurable goals and actions organized around four core themes:
- Modeling sustainable leadership
- Designing sustainable communities
- Supporting the natural environment
- Achieving zero waste.
Key actions include establishing City events as zero-waste events; adopting code revisions and a stormwater management plan to eliminate inconsistencies related to sustainable development; modeling energy conservation best practices; adopting revised neighborhood guidelines for trees and hedgerows; amending soil erosion and sediment control plans to preserve vegetation; and exploring opportunities to expand waste diversion through piloting an additional compost drop-off location and evaluating the feasibility of providing recycling to multi-family residents.
“The Dublin Sustainability Plan is both a guiding document and a call to action,” says Dublin Operations Administrator/Sustainability Emily Goliver. “This framework has been years in the making and serves as a comprehensive roadmap for advancing sustainability in every part of our community.”
Although the sustainability plan was recently adopted, the City’s commitment to sustainability spans more than 20 years. All of Dublin’s facilities have been 100% powered by renewable energy since 2023. Currently, Dublin’s fleet includes 68 CNG vehicles, 13 electric vehicles and 26 hybrid vehicles. The City also leads the way in waste diversion with a 47% diversion rate, which is above both state and national averages.
Sustainability in Dublin is a community effort. The plan emphasizes both the City’s implementation of its own sustainable systems and the encouragement of residents to embrace sustainable practices in daily life. Residents can take advantage of programs such as e-waste recycling, the Community Backyards rebate program, the Dublin Compost program, alternative transportation options and opportunities to install renewable energy equipment. Upcoming events like Document Destruction Day and Pumpkin Composting also provide opportunities to participate.
“An important component of this plan is action by residents,” Goliver notes. “Making progress toward a more sustainable Dublin will involve the whole community. Through strong partnerships with businesses, schools and residents, we can make a real impact, and it starts with the City leading by example.”
